Abstract
The need to preserve the built heritage with cultural, social and historical value has been rising for the past years. For that purpose it is necessary to acquire knowledge on the old techniques. Marmorite is a very durable wall covering that does not require painting or much other maintenance, particularly used in Portugal during the so-called Estado Novo period. It is a finishing render composed by lime or cement, stone dust, stone or glass aggregates and, sometimes, pigments. A few hours after its application, the surface is washed, revealing the aggregates. The aim of this study was to gather information which may contribute to the correct preservation of this render. Through the material and building technology analysis in previous studies, oral testimony and case studies, it was possible to conclude that there is much variability on this type of coating, as well as a diversity of styles in each region.
